After decades of dutiful service to Fletcher, former Mayor Bill Moore was recognized at the town council’s Monday night meeting. The council proclaimed Feb. 12, 2018 “Bill Moore Day,” unveiling a photo of the former councilman and recognizing his years of hard work.
The council passed the proclamation, which Mayor Rod Whiteside read aloud, in a unanimous vote before presenting the photo that will hang behind the council dais at Fletcher Town Hall and a gavel with Moore’s name and tenure inscribed.
Moore said he and his family are honored and proud to be recognized. He was treated Monday night to a standing ovation.
“I just feel proud not only of what we have done, but what we continue to do,” Moore said.
Moore, elected to the council in November 1995, was first elected mayor four years later, holding that post until the elections last year. Throughout that time, the proclamation passed Monday night says, he worked diligently and tirelessly for the residents and town.
He was elected mayor in 1999. The proclamation states, “during this time, serving as leader and advocate for the growth and advancement during his tenure … Bill Moore’s leadership and continued efforts have made him a stabilizing presence on the town’s governing board, bringing his sense of humor and ‘common sense’ to the table to discuss issues.”
Councilman Bob Davy noted that Moore also “did an awful lot for this town” before being elected, including with various recreational programs. Moore served as the first president of the recreation commission.
“Bill Moore has been an energetic voice for the citizens of Fletcher, wanting to serve all citizens equitably and fairly,” the proclamation states, adding that the council and current mayor thank Moore for his leadership and diligence of his efforts in making Fletcher what it is today.
